What does a child protective specialist do?

Child protective specialists ensure children’s immediate and continued safety and welfare by connecting them and their families to available resources. They have the unique opportunity to impact a child’s life through different actions. People don’t always realize what this often-thankless job entails since it’s performed mainly behind the scenes.

As a child protective specialist, you will grow tremendously as a person and get to do many things, including:

  • Evaluate a child’s environment
  • Investigate suspicions of abuse or neglect
  • Connect a family to available resources
  • Interview doctors, teachers, and family members
  • Interview potential foster or kinship families
  • Ensure adequate medical care and schooling
  • Schedule visitations and make appointments
  • Accompany police on investigations
  • Represent a child in court proceedings
  • Prepare reports and court records
  • Reunite children with their biological families
  • Follow through with families, providing well-rounded support
  • Collaborate with community agencies and providers to ensure families’ needs are met
